Nothin’ But Net Basketball Programs- History
(top)
Nothin’ But Net (“NBN”) was founded by Tom Hobson in 1996. Both had a long history of coaching and administrating youth sports in their communities through National Junior Basketball, recreation leagues and other youth sports oriented programs.
The concept was to provide a competitive spring basketball program for youth players that wanted to continue to develop and improve their individual game skills. The initial target for this program was 8th grade boys that were interested in additional playing experience prior to their entry into high school basketball.
The NBN Spring League started in 1996 with six teams. The eight-game league format and single elimination tournament has become the standard for the NBN Spring League. Each year the NBN basketball program grew. In 2001, over 80 teams, comprised of boys and girls teams in eleven different divisions took the court at five gym sites throughout the Inland Empire to compete against the best talent in southern California.
Shortly after their inaugural season, the founders recognized the need to integrate a referee coordinator to establish a standard for quality officiating during the games. Andre Bossieux, a veteran and well-respected CIF referee, joined the team as Referee Coordinator and a member of the governing board. Andre’s addition has allowed the quality of the officiating to expand and grow with the quality of the teams that participate in NBN.
With each year of expansion, NBN has added more gym sites. This expansion created the need for site coordinators. These coordinators oversee their respective gym sites and provide accountability at each location. These site coordinators
have become an integral part of the NBN experience by mirroring the founders commitment to a quality experience for all of the coaches, teams, players and spectators.
NBN has also expanded their passion and commitment to the league and its’ community by providing a free basketball clinic. The first clinic was held in 2000 at Rancho Cucamonga High School and conducted by NBA great
Reggie Theus. Approximately 100 kids received hands-on instruction from the 2-time NBA All-Star. Last season, the Men’s Coaching Staff and Players from Cal Poly Pomona, headed by Coach Steve Wachs conducted the community clinic.
2001 became a year of decision for NBN. The spring league had established NBN as the premier basketball league in the Inland Empire. Over eighty teams from 27 communities competed in boys and girls divisions ranging from 3rd grade to Junior Varsity high school levels, creating the largest spring league in the Inland Empire. Coaches, city administrators and others were anxious to see the league expand to provide a year-round basketball experience. The NBN Basketball Programs growth has been centered on “delivering on what we promise.”
In 2001, NBN created the first NBN Fall Basketball League. The league sold-out, featuring 44 teams from 28 different communities. Additionally, NBN hosted its’ first Thanksgiving Shoot Out Tournament as a preseason primer for teams entering their respective winter seasons.
All of this success has culminated into NBN publishing an Event Calendar for 2002. This calendar features several leagues, tournaments and clinics that NBN will sponsor and promote throughout the year, including its’ signature 6th Annual Nothin’ But Net Spring League. NBN will also host regional tournaments for Basketball Congress International (“BCI”) and the California State Games in 2002.
In addition to the planned events for 2002, NBN will also sponsor and promote “Community Tournaments.” These tournaments will be offered in economically and socially disadvantaged areas to expose them to a different level of organized sports.
NBN will continue to expand and build upon its’ reputation as “the premier basketball program in the Inland Empire.”

an organization that you can trust, committed to the highest ethical, moral, and business standards,
business professionals with a reputation for high quality of service and commitment to
our youth, one-stop service for integrated youth sports programs and services,
Additionally, NBN understands its’ leadership role in our communities as well as the need to create an environment that is open to everyone in our communities. We will continually leverage our professional and personal relationships in both business and sports to obtain client and corporate involvement in organized youth programs and sports development. A large share of these efforts will be spent in underprivileged and underrepresented areas where many of our youth dedicate themselves to high athletic achievement but, unfortunately, they have not learned how to apply the same disciple to their academic endeavors.
To become a leader in the development, execution and growth of youth and amateur sports programs. Our success is dependent upon a combination of powerful objectives:
